Her first show in Nanaimo was a success and helped establish her as an up and coming artist both to the public and with her peers whose constructive criticism she values immensely. She has had many one-woman and group shows at The Old School House in Qualicum Beach, Nanaimo Art Gallery, Nanaimo Arts Council and private venues.
Elissa has won awards of merit, and excellence for her work, but the ones that mean the most to her are the Peoples Choice awards.
When Elissa is not painting she teaches oil and acrylic painting to adults and children at her home studio, The MonElissa Studio in Bowser, BC.
Working primarily in oil and acrylics in an expressionist style to interpret the Vancouver Island landscapes, seascapes and flora, she captures emotion and soul in her work. Her wide range of professional and artisitc skills combined with a unique and funky sense of humour provide a delightful range of moderately priced original art. Her seascapes take you to a beautiful West Coast beach and her flowers uplift and soothe the soul. She shares with others the joys she has found in the art world.

While painting, time stands still. I lose myself in the colour, textures and the emotions each piece generates. Beginning with no definite pre-conceived plan or expectation, I let the paint guide me. I may introduce ink and collage to add contrast, balance, texture and interest. Hopefully I will pass on to the viewer a feeling of excitement and pleasure.”She holds a Bachelor of Education Degree (Arts Major); is an Associate of the Federation of Canadian Artists; a member of both the American Watercolour Society and the Northwest Watercolour Society.

Ken Kirkby,
Bowser
Web site: http://ken-kirkby.englishmanrivergallery.com
Ken Kirkby was born on September 1, 1940 in London, England. His family moved to Spain in 1945 and then, one year later, to Portugal where Kirkby spent his formative years. Ken moved to Canada in 1958 and almost immediately made his way north. During a five-year period, he lived with various groups of Inuit and travelled Canada's Far North extensively, recording the landscape, the people and the conditions in a vast collection of drawings. During this time, Kirkby discovered the awe-inspiring stone structures known as "Inukshuks".
On returning from the arctic, Kirkby took up residence in Vancouver and began translating his many sketches into magnificent oil paintings. His crowning achievement is a massive work titled "Isumataq". Measuring 152 feet long by 12 feet high, "Isumataq" is the greatest portrait on canvas ever painted. This strikingly beautiful creation was unveiled in the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa on March 30, 1992.
While he continues to present the Far North in his paintings, known often for their large format and impressive colour, he has turned his attention to depicting the grandeur of the West Coast. He now lives on the shores of eastern Vancouver Island and is the past president of the Nile Creek Enhancement Society, a non-profit, non-governmental organization recognized for the restoration of salmon habitat in the local rivers, estuaries and adjacent sea.

" SIT WITH ME"
Original Pastel ( (19 X 12 )
Joan Larson,
Qualicum Beach
Web site: http://www.joanlarson.com
Joan Larson has been involved in the arts all her life. An early interest in art led her to study at the Banff Centre, the University of Victoria, and the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.
Joan specializes in equine art work, often drawing upon her background of landscape and figurative painting to create her work. Born in Sexsmith Alberta, she was influenced by the open, rural landscape around her. However, a family move to Victoria, B.C. while still young, gave her an appreciation of the surrounding forests and ocean.
Her preference to work primarily with pastels is due to the exceptional colour effects that can be achieved when working with sticks of pure pigment. Her subjects have been described as "sensitive portrayals, so life like that the personalities shine through." Often using unusual angles of observation and varying light sources, she is able to capture the more subtle aspects of the human/animal relationship.
Joan's work has won awards and been featured in several publications. She shows her work at selected exhibits, including the Spruce Meadows "Masters"; Equi-Fair in Calgary, Alberta, and has been accepted to the American Academy of Equine Artists juried shows in Lexington, Kentucky. She is a member of the Pastel Society of Canada, the Equine Art Guild and the Federation of Canadian Artists. Her work can be found in numerous private and public collections.
